Rhubarb question!
« on: September 15, 2008, 09:02 »
I have quite a large Rhubarb plant , and have had quite alot of rhubard off it. I have left it quite few weeks or a month and there are loads of stalks on it, I pulled them out yesterday and they were pink at the base, would they still be edible this time of year. I got rid of the really thick stems as I thought they might be woody. Any information would be great!

Rhubarb is getting to be finished really, it is starting to store energy in its roots to go bonkers early next spring and give you nice fresh, tender, delicate shoots.

However, pick some of the younger pink shoots and give them a try, they won't kill you and at worst they'll be a bit chewy. Plus you'll be really hard pressed to kill off a rhubarb crown at any time.

Rhubarb question!

I was going to post a similar question as I have about 12 plants which I have neglected (I'm still a beginner!)

They all have green/red stalks and are quite thick.
I read in a gardening book, not to pick rhubarb after July.

So, I'm not sure what to do with all tha stalks I have.
Should I leave them or pick them and put them on the compost heap?

I'm leaving mine but I'm no expert but they should still be feeding the roots for next year. Looking forward to yummy forced rhubarb in the spring

So is the general idea that we stop pulling our rhubarb in July then?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

If you've been picking rhubarb through the spring, then its wise to stop picking by July so the plant can replenish itself for next year.
If you haven't picked anything at all this year, it's still a good idea to not pick now and simply leave the stalks to die off in fall. You could still take a few but you'll find they're less tender than spring stalks as well as stringier.
Come fall, give all rhubarb plants a nice mulching with old manure and come spring you'll be delighted with what you get.

We'll be leaving ours on for a bit, like Trillium says, it gives the plant chance to store away the sugars that youve been enjoying all year!! We treat ours a bit like daffs - leave the leaves on till they whither and then cut it right back and sling them in the compost!!
Either way, I like a bit of green rhubarb - makes you wink!!  ;)
