antibiotic without visit to vet?
« on: June 25, 2009, 23:35 »
hi - can i purchase an antibiotic without getting a prescription first? - to use on my bantam, i dont want to waste any time and dont want to stress her by taking to vet -i think she prob.may have  a resp. infection , since my last post her eye is gunged up and she has a bit of swelling in the front of her face by her eye - im scared she will go down hill fast - any ideas wher i can get the antibiotics off the shelf so to speak//?

I don't think you can lucy!  I have a couple who are snuffly, but Brian won't take me to the vet, and I can't drive, so I'm stuck.

You can use Baytril. You can buy it online. Its a broad spectrum antibiotic.

edit - just looked you need a presription filled out by your vet.

I don't know lucy, depends what it is they've got.  As we ahe so many, Brian won't take one to the vet.  One of the new hens we picked up the other week was wheezy and raspy breaths, but she got over it and now 3 of the others are doing similar.

I didn't know you could get baytril online?  There is an egg withdrawal period with that isn't there?

I'm just looking now G/A. If you buy it from the USA you don't need a script. Just checking prices. I would of thought you'd withdraw the eggs. Well I would anyway for any kind of infections? It would be systemic.

I agree with Foxy completely

I've just had to treat my whole flock for infectious bronchitis - sneezing, wheezing, listless... it apparently has a 100% sickness rate (I can confirm that!  :() and can kill as many as a quarter of a flock.  Luckily I've only lost one but had I left if much longer before seeing the vet it would have been much worse.  It was £30 well spent.

Good luck and hope your chook gets well soon
