« on: July 22, 2011, 20:33 »
This year  i thought i would try some summer PSB. I only picked my first harvest about a week or so ago and it is already flowering is this normal?

It's been an odd year, stressing plants out.  The flowering means that the spears have gone over.  If there are any stalks not yet flowered, pick them sooner rather than later.  If you cut back well you might get a second sprouting later in the season, perhaps?

(Hopefully someone who has actually grown broccoli will be along soon!)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Well it is summer, so no big surprise, its totally different to the over-wintering type

Sutty, i have never grown any brocalli before so its all new to me. I wanted to know if this is normal because if it is i won't grow the summer variety again.

My suspicion is that many veggies will bolt or go to seed every year, the trick is to catch them before they do so.  They are annuals so their purpose is to produce seed for the following year - if you keep removing the veggies, they don't set seed and so continue to produce new veggies in the hope that you'll fail to pick them and thus they can achieve their purpose.

I don't know enough about the different types of broccoli to say whether summer ones are better or harder than other types.

Sorry if .i offended  or misunderstood you brother.

Most sprouting brocolli needs regular picking when the shouts are young, doing this gives you a longer season and slows them going to seed.

The ones I'm doing this year are described as Calabrese Green Sprouting. I suspect I'm going to have to pick them pretty soon to stop them going to seed, because one or two are opening out already, but between seven plants the central sprouts don't amount to enough to feed two people for one meal :(
