Do my toms have blight?
« on: August 18, 2009, 08:36 »
Last night I noticed that some of my tom plants had yellowing leaves (see attached) is this blight? I have pruned off the offending leaves in the hope that this will help. I hope it isn't blight as this is my first time growing toms and they all have a nice load of toms/flowers developing.

Possibly - possibly not ( not much use am i  :tongue2:) The older lower leaves will often go yellow and brown as they age. If these leaves are not from the bottom of the plant then possibly yes. Plants in greenhouses are much less likely to be affected than plants outside. Are yours inside or out? The most obvious sign of blight for me is the brown marbling that appears on the fruit - got any?

Spraying with dithane is supposed to give some protection if it is not too late.

Black marks on the stems is another give away sign.

All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Most of the leaves are from the lower parts of the plant. Unfortunately I do not have room for a greenhouse, so all my plants are kept outside. As of this morning the only marks on my fruit a few tiny tiny brown dots, this was on one plant only. Some of my plants were quite bushy, so I pruned them a little to allow more air to circulate (I read that this may help). I was trying not to spray the plants with anything, for the moment anyway.

Cheers

Got my fingers crossed for you - it has been a very bad year for tomato blight.

Maybe, maybe not - but I would say if you start seeing brown patches on the stems, it may be time to cut your losses and strip the plants out before it gets to the fruit. At least then you get some chutney out of it.

I didn't see any brown marks on any of the stems, so hopefully I'm ok.

Cheers
