Please look at my tomatoes!
« on: February 08, 2008, 21:27 »

Hi all,

These are the only plants i've grown from seed ever so i'm trying to find out if they look ok and also when i should repot them?
They are living on my windowsill which is south facing and above a radiator, thats the only place i can keep them.
Oh and when should i start feeding them, they've been growing for about 3-4 weeks ish.

Thanks!

I'd seperate them into small pots soon and then just up the pot size every six weeks until you plant out.
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

I'd recommend you wait just a bit longer, until those smaller inside leaves get larger. Those inner ones are the true leaves and mean that you can safely repot the seedlings. Hold by the leaf when you repot, never the stem, and only gently firm into the new pot. Some people don't firm in at all, which is fine too. Just add a bit more mix around the top of the root area and water again.

As Trillium, you may want to put some silver foil behind them to bounce back some of the sunlight from behind it will help them not get leggy, and when you transplant, if they are plant them deeper than they are now.

Poundland is quite posh in E17
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Personally, I would sacrifice a few of them in order to make more space between the plants and let them grow a bit more before repotting.  Those big leaves are the seed leaves.  Wait a week or two until the true leaves grow and repot with the stems lower in the soil.   Well done, by the way.

They will grow more roots from the stem under the soil.

Aunt Sally is right plant them up to their necks and more roots will grow out of the stems.

Well done Igorina!

My tomatoes are going to be sown this week - still in the seed packet at the moment! I need to buy some seed and gravel trays first. They are going to go on the the garden room (old ramshackle conservatory - south facing windows ;) = cheap greenhouse(?)) I also have ordered some grobags - i swore I wouldn't use them this year as when I used them a couple of years ago they looked so ugly on the patio and it was hard to support the canes (i will have to get some of the cane support thingys) but I appear to have bought them anyway... I'm sure I saw some grobag trays somewhere - will have to look them up...)

for your first go your doing very well

ok you need to get them potted on ASAP as there starting to bolt

as has been said plant them up to necks but leave about 1/2 inch of stem

and give them as much light as you can and you should get some nice plants

Don't understand your reasoning here NP. Toms don't bolt like lettuce and such. Toms need their first set of true leaves (the tiny centre ones in igorina's pic) to be a bit larger which indicates adequate root growth to survive transplanting well.

Now I'm confused, I started a few in the propagator and thought once they'd germinated I had to move them, so I've transferred them into 3" pots, was I supposed to leave them in the prop til they had true leaves?
