You didn't do anything wrong Mashauk, but your transplant success rate greately increases if the true leaves are there along with their larger, stronger root systems. Moving them too early by inexperienced gardeners usually results in crushed roots and dead plants. No point rushing them.

ok you need to get them potted on ASAP as there starting to bolt

Don't understand your reasoning here NP. Toms don't bolt like lettuce and such. Toms need their first set of true leaves (the tiny centre ones in igorina's pic) to be a bit larger which indicates adequate root growth to survive transplanting well.

i meant leggy    all the plants strength is be wasted as it is looking for light

instead of going into growing its leaves

This is probably a stupid question but why do you need to keep uppingf the pot size - is it a bad idea to put them straight into a big pot and leave them?
I'm a very lazy gardener

Personally, I would sacrifice a few of them in order to make more space between the plants and let them grow a bit more before repotting.

I have just removed most of them as i only really need a few, i felt a bit guilty though lol. I left the strongest looking ones and i have some 4" pots ready for them to go in. I know that i'll have to water more in bigger pots but i don't want to keep messing about with them.

I never knew the thing about transplanting them deeper. That makes so much sense - last year the bases of all my toms were fairly weak and spindly so hopefully if i put them deeper this year they will be stronger plants with a better root system. Thanks for that!

Me too!  I didn't know that either.

Mine were weak and then they all just got blight, went brown and died.
