All year round green manure
« on: September 06, 2008, 23:56 »
Hi

I want to section off part of the run (rotating the sectioned area every few weeks) and whilst it is sectioned off, I want to plant some fast growing, all year green manure to feed the chooks. Depending on the height the manure grows, I may build a mesh frame over it to allow the chooks to graze through it.

Can anyone recommend a green manure please

Thanks planner, I’ve come to ask the same question,

I am moving my chooks to a new pen, they have been in the first one for almost 6months. I have been putting down bark chipping but after this rain it’s still a mud bath, so moving them to greener pastures.
 :D

In the old pen area I was going to dig it over and then plant something ready for next year; can anyone suggest plants that will grow over winter and will benefit the chooks when they move back in?

What about Alfalfa ? I know guinea pigs love it I'm sure chooks would eat it, it's pretty hardy from what I've read.

Could the chooks hurt their feet on the mesh if they try to scratch ??

Or is it a tried and trusted method ??

...in which case I might pinch the idea myself  :D

I asked a similar question a while ago and someone recommended perpetual spinach to me so I have started with this. It grows fast and the ducks love it. At the moment it is fenced off from them in the veg patch and I pick what I need for them. Once I have harvested my veg from the patch, they will be allowed free range to the patch as well as the rest of the garden and I am sure that  they will finish off anything left.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
