I've got three ISA Browns which are described as 'laying hybrids' - a cross between the Rhode Island Red and Rhode Island White breeds. They look just like warrens but I don't know if there is any difference.  The breeder said they are bred mainly as battery hens but that more and more people are buying them for the back garden. Our girls are lovely, friendly, easy to handle - they are rosey away all the time but quietly, and each lays an egg every day (virtually!).

Hybrids are very good for beginners, I was told -  my experience so far is that it was good advice!

Pekin bantams. Not a lot of eggs, but great personality and very friendly. if you have kids these chickens are the right size. They wont mess your garden up too much wither.

Did I mention I had two cockerals going spare?
