Equipment Shed / Re: enough is enough!

I now own "EGO Power+" brand, battery-powered blower, strimmer, hedge trimmer, and chain saw, all of which use interchangeable lithium ion batteries.  No complaints on any of them!!  Electric (plug-in or rechargeable) is the new best option for many of our common power garden equipment.

Equipment Shed / New equipment: "Dustin Mizer"
« Last post by Subversive_plot on Today at 01:48 »
This is something my boys gave me for "the winter holiday".  It is a hand-cranked applicator for agricultural dust (Dipel dust, diatomaceous dust, and similar). See photo.

I like many of the dust products, but the equipment to apply dusts are IMO not very useful. Hand-pumped dusters, squeeze bottles etc. all seem to apply unevenly (too heavy or not at all). This promised to apply an even thin coat with much less waste. It has a deflector that can direct dust to the underside of leaves, flip over to target tops of leaves, or remove entirely.

There was less than 5 minutes of assembly required.  I used it to apply Dipel to squash plants (our dreaded squash vine borers will be here soon).

It seems to fuction pretty well. I donned a safety mask. loaded dipel into the hopper, shut the lid. Set the deflector to blow upward to target undersides of leaves. It worked much better for me than other dusters. There were a very few clumps where the application was too heavy, but mostly it was light and even. I easily flipped the deflector over to target leaf tops (see photo of dusted squash leaves).

It seems to work as advertized so if you need a duster, I would reccommend this product for ease of use. Now lets see if it helps fix the bug problem!  :D

New Across The Site / Late Sowing Seeds and Planting Out
« Last post by John on Yesterday at 23:10 »
I get quite a few emails on the lines of ‘Is it too late to plant..?’ And when we’ve had a wet and cold start to the season the number of growers behind with things goes up. The thing is it depends on what the crop is, how it’s grown and what the weather is going to do.

Answering the question here

The Hen House / Adopting a mature hen (to keep the last one company).

My wonderful speckled girl has advanced bumblefoot and I'm really hoping she can come through it (antibiotics early days). It has spread to her toe and she limps. Two vet visits this week already.
Thinking ahead - if I have to lose her I'll have just one left.  I'd like to find her a friend.  Is there a simple way to find a retired older girl?  Most breeders offer POL or chicks..

Any suggestions very welcome. xx

Grow Your Own / Re: chicken pellets

They are quite high in nitrogen so wouldn't be of best use for flowering / fruiting plants once they have reached that stage. Leafy plants will like it, including onions as well as brassicas.

I was tempted by a lamb burger as it was on offer ... it wasn't good, but the nice man from ocado has bought me some stoopidly large spuds for once. I foresee a proper oven cooked jacket spud in the very near future.  :tongue2:

Always thought influenza was a very nasty virus - spelling might have changed but still surely best avoided if at all possible.
