Forgot My Chooks
« on: January 27, 2011, 08:58 »
Hi,

Please dont anyone call the RSPCA or say I'm some sort of monster!!! I feel terrible as it is.
I went out this morning to let my hens out, only to find the copp all locked up etc. i then realised that I had totally forgot about them yesterday. So they were locked up all day yesterday.
Apart from totally re-arranging their coop, the all seem fine. The question is will they be ok for that period of time without food or water?
They were out like a shot this morning and it wasnt even properly light.
As I said I feel terrible and this was a genuine mistake, god knows what I was thinking. I have had them just under a year now and never forgot before.

OH DEAR

They don't seem to have come to any harm but they would have if it had been high summer.

I presume you don't have them at home as they wouldn't have been forgotten if they were in the garden.  Have you considered and automatic pop hole opener ?

Hi Aunt Sally,

Yes they are at home, and yes the normally have the run of the garden. Their coop is round out of site tho.
As I said I cant feel any worse than I do, but they did seem fine.
Sorry to all my fellow keepers on here must make me look irresponsible.

No it doesn't make you look irresponsible - just human.

I forgot to pick my 5 year old son up from school one day.  The school phoned me about half an hour after "home time".  Does it make me a bad mother ?

Hey Guys,

As i have mentioned in previous posts the importance of automatic door openers. Wonderful device! I've just moved our pen to fresh location where the grass grows green and the robbins play blissfully in the awaiting dusk! Even then in the morning as the sun rises and the door opens and away they go! When it gets dark "Vindaloo" my head beautiful blacktale rounds the girls up then has a final check and the door shuts. Simples*

Hope they didn't break any eggs in there if they did lay? You dont want birds eating broken eggs can lead to all sorts of problems.

Also i hang a water bottle in my coop so they have water at all times.

Over the years I'm managed this mistake on several occasions. It happens, they are fine, don't worry.

Well, I did the exact opposite as you last night and forgot to let them in.  2 out of 3 have been broody for the last few days so I decided to shut the hen house door so they couldnt get in and brood on the floor.  Went out at 6.30 to lock them in and there they were, all cuddled up under house.  BAD MUMMY!!! Well I think that's what they said  :nowink:

I left my 6 week old daughter and pram in a clothes shop!  But the prize goes to my sister.... her 12 year daughter came to the UK from Australia to spend 6 months with me.  She was put on the plane  woken by the airline to come and collect their daughter!!  They ahve never lived that one down!
