After posting about excessive drinking, I began to wonder if I am feeding my chickens too much, though I thought that they should have as lib layers pellets. When I put in greens, like kale, ground elder, lettuce etc, they leave it!  I thought chickens were supposed to love fresh stuff. They do like corn on the cob, tomatoes, apples etc. are they fussy; developed a sweet tooth??!!!

Try hanging a cabbage up for them to peck at, I use a metal skewer in the heart of the cabbage.  I would avoid giving them other treats and stick to the pellets ad lib.  A small handful of mixed corn on an evening in very cold weather is ok but you don't need to do it every night.  Fat poultry will be prone to health problems just like us.

My chooks wouldn't eat the things you mentioned so that is normal for some, you will find others will say their chooks love lettuce etc. By the way lettuce should be fed very sparingly as can cause diahorrea  :blink: Some chooks seem to know this and some don't!!

Ok. Thanks.  I did not know that about lettuce.  No wonder my chickens don't even look at it!
