Help needed quick
« on: March 03, 2010, 22:36 »
Right, put a post on here earlier saying that eggs have started pipping, but i seem to be struggling now to keep humidity up, and the little holes that the babies have made where you can see the membrane seems to be drying out and going hard, the eggs have been the same since about 5pm with no progress, the one that has hatched i will admit, rightly or wrongly i helped out as you could see the membrane drying on the chick.
what should i do???? i have sponges in there and the little water tank has water in it! i have also sprayed the sides, the temp is  stable and has remained the same through out.
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

I will add more water and hope for the best, as i really need to go to bed now, i will keep you posted, hopefully all will be hatched in the morning and i wont have to worry anymore. This is only the second time i have hatched eggs, so still all new to me, i have read all sorts of things for keeping the humidity up, but i just can't seem to get mine to stay stable, despite my best efforts.
This is as bad as it was waiting for my daughter to give birth lol

I'm afraid my incubator is automatic, so I don't have to worry abut the temps at all, but Joy did you try Debbie?   know she had probs with humidity on her little incy's.

Also Nails, when Debbie first stated hatching, I know she had some trouble with chicks shells drying out, and she used to wrap them in damp towels for a bit.  I've also helped out a couple, just by keeping the shells damp then gradually peeling away little bits of shell.  some say you shouldn't do this, but I have.  sometimes it works, other times they still die, but they'll die anyway.

Good luck, hope they are okay!

I have sponges and wet kitchen towel in there, with the wet sponges on top of them, so that it stays, humid, the little one i helped out is still ok, still chirping away every time i go in the room, but it still has the umbilicle attached, but i thought it best to leave it along and let it come off on its own.  The temp is 38.5 humidity is 67-68

You could either wrap them in damp warm towels for a few minutes or ideally if you have a water spray fill with warm water and lightly mist the eggs that are struggling. I too have helped out chicks and have had 50/50 success with them. One of the experts on using incubators is TMG so hopefully she will be on with more advice for you xx

I have been spraying them, its just that it has been 6 hours since they started, although i looked back on some old topic's on here and it says that they can go for about 24 hrs before it would be to late so i might try and get some sleep, and pop down later and check on them, if nothing has happened by the morning, i will if they are still alive, help them out part way.
