Quick. What should I do?
« on: April 11, 2008, 17:00 »
Got a chicken emergency.
We have a bath in the run with the chickens and ducks. I've just got home and one of the chickens was in the bath and is freezing.
She was in there for a maximum of half hour.
She is shivering and cant stand very well.
I have bought her inside, towel dried her and put her in a cardboard box with lots of straw.
What else can I do? She doesn't look good.

Try to get her as dry as possible - I use a hairdryer to get them dry when I have washed them. Maybe you can dry her a little more then put the box close to a radiator or something.

Thanks Foxy. I have towel dried her as much as I can. She still isn't standing. I have put straw all round her (and a little over her) and put the box near the radiator in a quiet room.
I think the hairdryer might stress her too much at the moment.
Fingers crossed but she doesn't look good.

I was also wondering about syringing some warmed sugared water to help her come round a bit?

I have just checked on her.
She feels warmer to the touch now and is looking around but still not standing.
OH will be home soon so we will try her with some sugared water then.
Thanks everyone.

Warm sugar water works a treat she may well have completely exhusted herself trying to get out of the bath - poor little thing  :(

Maybe a little warm porridge and a tiny bit of sugar who be easier for her to eat now!

You could sit her on a warm water bottle too!

THANK YOU all so much. It looks like the worst is over.
She has had some warm sugared water and pecked at some layers mash. Looking a bit brighter (wet chickens look so pathetic!) but not standing yet.
Isn't it funny how much we care about are chicken friends. :)
I will keep you posted on her progress.
Her name is Coke by the way. Her sisters are Fanta and Sprite.

Update!
She looks so much better. I am really surprised, she looked so bad I thought she wouldn't make it.
She has eaten, drank and is moving around a little. She feels warm and just her tail feathers are still a little damp.
Her comb is bright red again, after being almost blue earlier.
I am keeping her inside tonight and hopefully she will be ok to go back with her sisters tomorrow.
Thanks again for all your support and advice.
