still having problems with black rock
« on: July 24, 2011, 15:45 »
when my other two ladies are happily dusting themselves and getting comfy in the dirt, black rock is persistently pecking at and i've noticed, eating the feathers of them.
I have mentioned before that my black rock is aggressive and will intentionally come to peck you!
please, any help/advice would be much appreciated, i really do not know what to do!!! :(
I know I'll become addicted, i'll just have to move house...
It starts with 3!!! (june 19 2011)

Hello Gina,

I don't know what you have tried but you could try separating her for a few days.  That way she will have to work her way back up the pecking order.

I have read that some people recommend anti-pecking spray.

What are you feeding them and how big an area do they have to range?   Hens can develop this behaviour if too confined or lacking something in their diet.

I have also read that you could try beak bits as a last resort.

as stated by bantam she could be lacking protein or something other.

But also she could be trying to take over as head hen as well as in wanting to take the best spot in the dust bath and bullying to make a point if not boss maybe 2nd in command.

if it's excessive feather plucking more apt to be bullying and i find anti peck spray dont work so well but beak bit's do.

To stop her pecking you - use your fingers to peck at her, not hard but just enough for her to get the point.  Worked with one of our hens and have recommended it to others who have also said it worked for them.  You need to be the top of the pecking order.   :D
