Stuff you won't bother with in future
« on: August 23, 2023, 16:22 »
In my case it's runner beans. Just 10 seeds created far more beans than I, living alone, could keep up with meaning that I had to compost loads that had overgrown into 12" long "wooden" pods. Anyone else made resolutions for next year?

Good afternoon AlaninCarlisle,
my never again is sweet potato, the things took over with masses of foliage and no spuds.  Brassicas is on the borderline.

Cheers,  Tony :(

Runner beans?

When my neighbours see me approaching with a carrier bag they make a run for it...

My favourite veg - even living alone, I'd rather plant plenty than have none at all  :D

Runner beans for me too. OH likes them but he's on a restricted diet and doesn't use them now, so there's me trying to make my way through several bags of frozen ones - nope! Much prefer French beans.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

French beans for me too. I have a glut of them but, unlike runner beans, they don't become "wooden" overnight

My beloved insists on paring away the edges of runner beans no matter how young they are.  But as it is her favourite veg'.  I prefer Climbing French beans.

Cheers,  Tony.

Aubergines (we call them eggplant).

We use them frequently each month, and love them, but I can't get rid of flea beetles using the controls I'm willing to use (I stop short of hard chemicals). Too much effort for very little yield.

Hello and good afternoon,   Subversive_plot,
You should be well positioned to see the full solar eclipse next year!
Cheers,  Tony.

Cheers,  Tony.

We will only see a parital eclipse here in 2024, though venturing west is an option. I did see the August 2017 total eclipse, from Anderson, South Carolina, with my two sons. Spectacular if you ever have the opportunity!

Melons... Plants sulked and hardly grew. I have a tiny melon the size of a ping pong ball for all of my efforts.

I was going to add aubergine to the list but they've clearly heard they are on a last warning and I have some fruits this year-even on the ones outdoors that were the weakling plants I couldn't give space to in the PT.

Purple cherry tomatoes, I’d seen them in the supermarket and thought they would be an interesting addition. I should have bought some and tasted them first ::) They are utterly tasteless and took ages to ripen. Just need to find something else to grow alongside Sungold next year.

Beetroot after this (and last) year's failures...

We use so little nowadays, I might just as well buy some and also that saves me boiling them for ages!

And I won't bother with peas as well - they're gorgeous straight from the pod, but if they go over a day or so, they're just not worth the space! We just can't keep up with them!

I’m sorry you struggled with beetroot this year and last Growster.
However you may want to consider a pressure cooker if you want to cook them rapidly if you do have any.
Keep digging

The other crops I won't be bothered with next year are broad beans and peas. Both crop too much too rapidly  for me living alone and my next-door neighbour isn't keen on them.
The crops I'll be doubling up on next year are French beans, Spinach, Mangetouts and Leeks
