Is wild garlic suitable for allotment growing?
« on: September 07, 2023, 10:56 »
Hi All - I would love to grow some wild garlic under the mature fruit trees on my plot - for pollinators, to deter pests from the fruit trees and to harvest for cooking, but I've read that they can become an issue. I have wild garlic in the garden at home and although it does move slightly each year, it doesn't appear to be that rampant - is there something I'm missing?

We have it growing in the garden at home and I am forever digging it up as it will take over the garden if left unchecked. You should be OK but I suggest putting it in a corner.

Would a raised bed contain it's spread?

It would help, but it spreads by seeding itself. Frankly, I love it! It's taken over my small wood at the end of the garden and I adore its scent whenever I walk through it in spring and early summer

I did exactly that under a Bramley apple about 2 years ago.  Wouldn't say its thriving cos everything is bone dry.  Will have to see if it re-emerges again in the spring

Thank you all for your comments, I'll plant them under the apple tree, which is on the border of my plot and out of harms way if they do 'wander'. I agree wholeheartedly that a wood carpeted with wild garlic is a wonderful sight (and smell - if you like garlic!) :D

Mine struggles as the dog thinks it's a bed.
I don't like the smell that much in the house.
