Never grown it before but love eating it - when can I plant it?

You can get spring planted varieties, so anytime now, really,  but I've had really good results with the over winter types that are planted September/Octoberish.

You got chance to try both & compare!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When you say shop-bought, do you mean supermarket cooking garlic, or gardening garlic?  And when did you buy the garlic - this spring, or last autumn?

Autumn sown garlic varieties tend to need the winter to stimulate the bulb splitting but you may be OK.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

yep supermarket/eating garlic from a german place.

I bought it about 3 days before I planted it, and only planted it because it was shooting (every clove in 3 bulbs). its on a table on the patio in full unseasonal sun at the mo, and braving the niight frost without a fleece jacket

Well, nothing ventured, but you may be lucky to get a decent crop.  The variety probably isn't one for spring sowing, and it almost certainly won't be designed for growing in our climate.  Hopefully it won't be carrying any disease that might affect the crop this year or for the future.

We planted garlic in October and it's now probably about just over 6 inches high.  It's been that height for quite a while now though, at least a month or 3.  Having said that, it's survived about a foot and a half of snow so I'm guessing it's the real deal.  It's off a supermarket shelf mind you?

Planted supermarket garlic some years back, did pretty well.

They came out a little smaller then the ones they came from but were a lot stronger.
The larger garden centre, special garlic for growing ones really have never done better, often worse and considering the relative cost they have done poorly by comparison. ???

Make sure they are fed with something like bonemeal and see what transpires. :D
