Onions & garlic problem
« on: April 08, 2011, 15:29 »
Last Nov I planted some red and white onion sets and 2 varieties of Garlic one Sovent Wight cant remember other one at the min. Anyway after a disasterous day(thats a whole different story) The chickens managed to get out and dug some of them up. When looking at them they look like they haven't grown at all see pic below.

Can anyone tell me whats wrong and should we just dig them up and plant something different.

Thanks Ma x

Nothings wrong  :D  All the food in the set/clove has gone into growing leaf, and in a month's time, with all that sunshine, (rain or watering if its dry) and warmth, the bulbs will start to bulk up.  Onions are magic - throughout May, take a photo of the onion bed once a week from the beginning of the month and you'll see visible changes.  Overwintered onions are usually ready from about mid-June - early July, and garlic about July-ish  8)

They look fine, they have to use a lot of energy growing leaves before they start to fill out the bulbs. Put them back in and give the hens a talking too.

haven't grown at all?...did you plant them with all those lovely roots and leaves on then?
They don't tend to start fattening up till much later in the year, just bung them back in and that's it :)

Fantastic  :) :) I have some exactly the same, planted last year, became swallowed up by weeds (neglected  :( :()
I transplanted them in November ish & after the hard winter the entire "brown onion" walnut size,  had rotted, but still lush greenery exactly like yours Ma Lowe.

I'm glad I decided to leave them in....best news I've had all day...except that it's friday & the weekend is going to be shorts 8)   :D
