Friendliest Hens
« on: February 28, 2015, 23:21 »
Ok.. I have managed to find a home for my "surprise" cockerel and reluctant to split them up, I let my girl go with him as they were raised together :-(

This means I can start afresh with two new girls .. but I am wondering what type are likely to be the friendliest small to medium size birds ..

Battery type (warren, goldline etc) are bred to be placid so they do not cause havoc in the laying cages.

They are all individuals though so nothing can be 100% sure.

Most hen friendliness is IMO cupboard love, down to what food you have in your hand at the time ! :)

Definitely Warrens, they were the first hens that we kept and they used to love to sit on our knees when we were sitting in the garden.  :)

I'd go for something a little more exotic - a Thuringian. I had a couple of these before a goshawk came calling and they were the friendliest hens and would perch on my arm whenever I was in the coop. Cleaning out was fun - I don't know how many times I managed to shovel them out with the wood shavings. They chater rather than cluck and are completely mental. They are the size of a bantam, but lay a small to medium egg every day just about, but not during the winter. Here's what they look like:

Thankfully now everything is safely netted (quarter of an acre!) and I will be on the look out for some more.

The last 3 we bought sort of chose us instead of the other way round. We were in a garden centre and they jumped up onto the wooden fence to be stroked, how could we resist? Not sure what their breeds were they were all different to look at.

My cockerel, Barry, has to be the friendliest bird I have ever know

When ever the kids come over for eggs, I let the chickens out so the kids can see them, Barry perches on the wall the kids hold out their arms and he just crouches down and they give him a cuddle

I have never seen this on any other bird, cockerel or hen

(he is a Buff Orpington, big and golden looking)
