Friendliest Hens?
« on: June 22, 2012, 17:16 »
We have just started up with two hens, a goldline and rhode black both are lovely girls and starting to show interest in getting to know us.
We have room for 4 more hens and are interested in particular having friendly hens as we have built a place to sit with them.
Which breed would you recommend that also produce a good egg?
Thanks

Most hybrids are classed as friendly/docile, but I recently visited a breeder of 'warrens' and they are  apparently quite happy to sit on your knee, I guess it depends on how friendly you want them?!
x1 Light Sussex x1 Black Rock x1 Bluebell x1 Silver Sussex

I have 5 girls and are friendly and eat from  my hand. The ancona and cream legbar both let me pick them up without any fuss and sit on my knee each evening before i put them away. Both lay delicious eggs the legbars are blue  and the anconas are white and very creamy.

We have a Speckledy, a Black Rock (maybe) and a warren. While they are all very friendly, and follow us and the dogs around, (including into the kitchen at every opportunity, they never get cross at being shooed out!) the speckledy is boss lady and feisty, the black rock is a little scatty, and the warren is a real sweetheart, I call her Nice-but-dim, affectionately of course. She is definitely my favourite.

thank you all, I most definately wont be eating my hens. Mine are pets and want them to be that, I couldn't eat them or feed them to my hybrid dogs.
You have all mentioned hens Ive looked at, I also love the Silkie as I'm a softie?
we are fine feathered farmers just wanting to love our new flock. We want the best for our personalities and give them the best to give us big eggs. x

I loved my 2 white silkie girls, but the eggs are small as they are bantams, and they were always broody, hence not many eggs either!!

The friendliest ones I've found are the brown ones like the Warrens, ISA, goldlines etc

I have a couple of goldlines and one is gorgeous and the other is a bit scatty.

I have just bought a border blue and a pennine amber. They are a quieter hen and so far still a bit shy but really beautiful.

 :D
Cheers
Debra ;)

Definitely the traditional red hybrid, ISA/Goldline/Blacktail. Sadly, part of the reason they are chosen for battery farms is their compliance and docility.

I think someone mentioned faverolles - although they look a bit like George 4 (chubby round the neck).
One grandma and 4 baby Pekins.

I am about to get a Wynadotte and a Maran.   Any opinions on how tame and friendly these are?  Or should I go for Light Sussex, they seem to be recommended as healthy and friendly.

Luz, what I meant was the cockerals can't be kept and the type is good for meat, 3 are cockerals hoping the rest aren't!! My girls are fed until the end and 2 are 6 years old.
