Eglus are SOOOO expensive - but do they really not get red mite?
Honestly? Has anyone ever had or heard of someone with an Eglu getting mites?

Lice I guess are a problem whatever your style of coop.

From what I've heard no unless the hens come in contact with a source of red mite but theres no where to hide inside an eglu for a mite.

i would have thought that all birds could get red mite whatever they live in, but the plastic of an eglu would mean they would be much easier to get rid of, i don't really know tho.

I've had my eglu for 3 years and have never seen a red mite.  Cleaning once a month and dusting with diatom in any areas where there could be a hidey place is a good system.  

I have known a couple of people who have had red mite in their eglu. Problem areas are the ends of the roosting bars and the lip around the egg port.  If you ever have them irradication is quick, easy and sure.  Wash it out - Diatom - Gone !

We have had an eglu for about 5 years and never had a problem with red mite.  We love our eglu, I would love one of the big cubes

sorry to hijake the thread but what are the eglu cubes like? i have heard a couple of horror storys about them being leaky and drafty, but also some very good reviews too. does any one here have one? and have the had a problem with any of these things?

I am getting on fine with the bars Aunt Sal. They don't fit like the wooden ones though and I do have a slight ramp now but the girls don't seem to mind

The muck doesn't stick to them either so you're not having to wash em all the while    There's nothing to come apart either which was an irritation for me with the wooden ones.

Wish I had a cube    I think they ironed out the problems experienced with the earlier model.  If you visit the Omlet website they have a forum so you'd get first hand feedback on them

A couple of my friends have Omlet Cubes and there was a water drainage  design problem originally but Omlet made a adaption piece to divert the rain water so that the problem was resolved.

I'm new to this forum, but came on looking for information about redmite as we have been suffering with them in our eglu. have treated with poultry shield and Diatom and so far so good - at least the eglu is easy to clean!

Kathy - did you try the Milbenex for red mites?

We used it last week and it worked like magic.

I went away for a week in july, and when I got back the little critters had moved in again. We'd been poulty sheilding and diatoming regularly until then and hadn't seen a thing, and we'd been doing the same since, but we couldn't seem to get rid of them - we were seeing more and more each day!

I used the Milbinex last wednesday, and I can honestly say I haven't seen one mite since. I need to spray it around again tomorrow, but then I shouldn't need to for 6 weeks :o) the best £5 I've spent in a long time :o)

I hope you managed to get rid of yours.
