Red Mite in my Eglu Cube
« on: September 18, 2011, 15:23 »
I'm sooooooo angry.  I hate the little ******.  grrrr.  For anyone with a cube, they were under the panel which comes out between the nest box and roost space.  More annoying, is the cube is completely hosed out every 2 weeks, and cleaned with poultry shield - and they weren't there last time I cleaned it.

that is how quick redmite takes hold. The beauty of plastic houses is that they can be cleaned so very quickly without the need of chemicals. However you should make sure when you wash them out it is away from where they are sited as the mites will be simply washed onto the ground and will simply crawl back in  >:(.

Plastic isn't a cure for RM they will still colonise any where there is high humidity and a nice tight space and any trapped dirt will just encourage them too.

The advantage that plastic has is as Joy says plus there are fewer seams in an EGLU than a wooden coop and plastic is much less likely to be damp they like high humidity.

Wooden coops have the advantage that if you are prepared to use chemicals (a pesticide) they can be made to be completely red mite free for up to a year for very little cost as the pesticide impegnates the wood and retains its potency once dry to the touch.  Obviously it won't on a plastic house which requires a very regular cleaning process.

mine get cleaned no more often than any wooden coop (they do not need more regular cleaning) and without pesticides  :)

I haven't had any mite in mine yet (touch wood!) for 3 years.
I dust Diatom quite thickly everywhere.
