Cooking parsnip crisps

Try parsnip crisps....

Potato peeler - remove outer skin then slice thin longish strips of parsnip with the peeler
Deep fat fryer - drop slices into fat for a quick pip
Drain - cool - crunch!!
Lovely

If only we had a deep fat fryer...

You can make them in the oven too. Slice thinly, sling in a bowl with seasoning, suished garlic if you like it, and a sprinkling of oil. Mix with your fingers making sure all the slices have a coating of oil and spread out on baking trays and cook until crisp.

That's useful Mrs Ball as we don't have a deep-fat fryer...my mother did until she moved and I "lost" it.  ;)

i have a deep fat fryer but i don't use it if I can help it. Stinks the place out, so prefer to use the oven if possible or shallow fry sometimes.

We've just had a T*fal actifry for Christmas, any one else got one? Mr S & son tried it out on Christmas evening, but the chips were soggy, did they do something wrong, at that rate it will be going back.

If that,s the one where you only use a little oil as the pan tilts, then I have only used it twice and was very disappointed with the results.

Yes it is. Just tried it again with thicker cooked chips & 2 tablespoons of oil & it was much better, will try other stuff in it as well. No horrible smell in the house is a bonus & it cleared away quickly, didn't have to wait for a big pan of oil to cool so it invariably gets left til the next day.

All the reviews I have seen for this haven't been very complimentary. :(

I was tempted to get one but resisted. I much prefer doing homemade oven chips, etc. Besides which it is another item to find space for on the counter and I like lots of space and no clutter.

Yes I agree,it is big,but hubby had wanted one for a long time, not sure it will be worth it cost wise for how often we have chips & not sure I would want to do risotto or lamb chops in it

I cook parsnip crisps in the oven too, on a pizza tray, great results.

We've got an actifry, really good but you do need to experiment with the times, oh and don't  do breaded stuff, ended up with naked scampi & some balls of breadcrumb . Gonna try these crisps though they sound great.

You don't need to take away the woody centre for crisps? I do love parsnips but I've never tried making parsnip crisps. The only thing I don't like about parsnips is having to do the fiddly bit of cutting out the woody core. And I thought they had to be cut in slices across the root rather than long slices down it - is that wrong? I must try making some because by some freakish accident I managed to grow some really nice parsnips this year. Do they go with a bit of chilli flakes rather than garlic, or that too strong?

Give it a go and let us know!!

I just have mine plain when I get the chance.... adds a bit of difference now and then when we have a roast.

I guess you could slice them anyway you like but I tend to avoid the central core if it's a bit on the tough side. Usually my snips aren't big enough to get tough and the little ones cook up beautifully.

Good luck with the adventurous trials.  ;)

I've never bothered, just shave with a peeler so your slices get broader towards the centre of the parsnip, then drizzle with a little oil and black pepper, mix and drape over a pizza tray, then cook in a coolish oven, something like 160/140(fan) °C for 20-30 minutes. Perfect results, but watch they don't catch and burn, it can happen quickly! Add sea salt once cooked, if required. :)
