Starting vegetable plot in May. Ideas?

I grow lettuces and slug food in baskets and boxes in grow bag compost on my lotty tables to try and keep the sluggies off.  A good height for working at so I don't have to bend.  Carrots and radishes also get the same treatment, oh and beetroot
