My spuds are rubbish
« on: August 23, 2008, 18:10 »
I don't know if it is me or I got rubbish seed potatoes, but the spuds I have harvested have not been good at all. I only got my plot late in spring and the only seed spuds I could get were some Charlotte and some Pentland Javelin from Homebase. I put these into very poor clay soil (I had not had time to work it properly). When I harvested both they were flouery and no good for salads at all- the skins and outer flesh came off before the middle was cooked. Is this due to poor growing conditions or did I get duff seeds?

mine were the same cimera, probably a result of poor soil and being left in too long I was told by fellow plotters.

I'm not sure about the Pentland Javelin but Charlotte if left to mature in the ground will become floury and tend to break up when boiled.  I steam them and they are delicious

Thanks,
They went in a month late so I lifted them late (some are still in the ground). My mistake then- I'll try steaming them though.

pentland javelin are well known for going floury when left too long, my father says this and used to grow them for years, moved to a diff variety now.

Ahh...so that's the reason for floury, crumbly charlottes then!  Beautifully shaped potatoes, not particularly heavy yielding I found.

I grew Arran Pilot last year, they were tasty and seemed heavy yielding compared to this years potatoes.  Only thing is potatoes were odd shaped and a bit scabby - not pretty.

Undecided what to grow next year... :?
