Why don't you have a look at the poultry stickies above and make a list of the questions you still have? Tell us a bit about where you want to keep them. I'm sure someone will be able to help.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

if you read through the links on here it will answer all your questions just look at a subject you want to know about and you will find all the answers you need. Personally I love my little brown warrens (isa browns) they are the most common, very friendly and very hardy.  :D

Hello goldensmurf,
Welcome to the Hen House.

Hybrid hens are generally considered the easiest of birds for beginners.  These are cross breeds so come in many colours and sizes, depending on their parentage.
They can live up to 8 years and occasionally more, but tend to lay their most eggs in the first two years.
They rarely go broody as they have been bred just as egg laying machines, if I'm brutally honest, but they have great characters.

Pure breeds are much more expensive to buy, and generally lay eggs on a Seasonal basis.
However, they do tend to lay for more years.

Ex-battery hens have usually had a traumatic, hard life, so in my opinion, need more experienced keepers.  They usually need Layers Mash to begin with.

All chickens need Layers Pellets (I prefer to let them eat ad lib).
                            Fresh Water, daily ad lib.
Grit, to aid digestion, ad lib
Oyster Shell for calcium (ad lib) for strong bones and egg shells
Corn for a pre-bed time treat, particularly in the Winter.
Apple Cider Vinegar for in their water.
A good Medicine Chest in anticipation of ailments, injuries, etc., etc.

Also, it is worth trying to find out if your local Vets have a chicken expert... it could make all the difference to your girls.

You will NOT need a cockerel unless you are aiming to breed pure breeds for showing and/or selling.

I'll leave some of the answers to people more in the know than me, but I would say this:  Beware of advice by hen-house sales jargon that such and such a number of hens will fit in.  Hens need about 12 inches each per perch, three nest boxes per 6 birds and at least 2m x2m of run each.  The more space the better.

Good luck.
