Start all over again
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:09 »
Hi all,

Well as the title says, im having to start my toms, peppers and chillies all over again.
They all came through (even the chillies) i took the top off the propagator and turned it off.
15 days later and their prety much all dead, the leaves have curled up and on most of them im left with just a stem with a brown tip.
Is this damping off disease? and if so how do i avoud it next time, this is the first time i've had this problem and i've done everything the same as previouse years.
Could this problem have come in the new compost?

Andy

Are they next to a window ? It still gets very cold at night (well it does here), its worth moving them inside the room a little of the evening.

They're next to a window but not on the windowsill, they are on a table so a couple of feet away and that room is always fairly warm.
I cleaned all the trays and the propagator thoroughly with Vircon and rinsed well too.
Fresh new compost from B&Q, seived, and watered with tap water.
This is the way i've always done it, thats why i can't figure out whats gone wrong.

when I've been hit by damping off it's rotted the stem through at compost level...

Light levels have been very low here.  If your guys were a couple of feet from the window (during the day) that might have been too far?

Assuming they have had a reasonable amount of water (which is likely as you have done it before) I wonder if the compost is at fault? or residues of the cleaning agent? (not familiar with Vircon, although I know the name)
