What do I do to prepare for my 2 weeks away?
« on: July 29, 2010, 21:37 »
I have so much growing and needing harvesting, courgettes, french beans late peas and lettuces.  I have told 3 of my OH's friends to help themselves in return for some watering but is there any other practical things to do?
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Mulching will be good to keep moisture in (try grass clippings), just in case watering isn't kept on top of properly.  Give everything except legumes a good feed, and pick any leaves off that aren't looking tip top.  Net anything that may need it if you can, and slug pellet/protect tha day before you go.

Happy hols!

With the rain we've just had, it should be ok.  Its your greenhouse (if you have one) that you need to worry about.  Your stuff needs to be watered.

Its when you come back and you see all the weeds :(

I went on my 2 week hols in early June.  Before I went, I cleared my plot of all weeds, it was pristine.  2 weeks later, when I got back, the weeds.  I'm still weeding :(

I suggested OH's friends did some weeding until they started asking which were weeds which weren't.  I suppose I will just have to put the hours in when I get back.

I'd say most important thing is to get regular picking....most crops keep cropping like that, but two weeks without being picked and some will set seed and never recover their cropping.

I have a plot at Lidgett lane allotments.  I did help a friend with her allotment at Chapel Allerton for a while it was riddled with Mares tail what a nightmare that weed is.
