do I need to pollinate my chillis?
« on: May 21, 2010, 14:53 »
I had a disaster last year trying to grow chillis and got nothing after starting them late and trying to grow in a place that was not full sunlight. This year I started them early and on my sunniest windowsill. I have 3 types , Big Jim, Jalapeno and Golden Ceyene they seem to be doing ok and are a reasonable size producing flowers. I recently read about using a little brush to pollinate Chillis - do I need to do this - will they cross pollinate, will I get nothing unless I do use the brush?

I really want to get something this year - any advice appreciated.

if you are growing indoors, then yes is the answer. cross-pollination mmmmmm... well i dont know. but use the brush technique to do a bit hand-pollination. you might get a bumper crop!!

If kept indoors you will need to pollinate, the small soft brush appraoch is easiest.

They will cross pollinate but it is only the seeds in the fruit that are cross pollinated. The fruit on each type will stay true to the variety but anything grown from the seeds will be a cross.

Some may be better then the ones they came from, some may be worse.

I have always grown them indoors where there is obviously no air movement to shake the pollen about to ensure good pollination, so I do sometimes give them a bit of a "tap" from time to time when in flower (i.e. same as tomatoes.)

Seems to work pretty well; save your paintbrush for any courgettes or squashes which seem to set fruit but which subsequently rot off from the flower end (these have male and female flowers though; slightly different technique.)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Handy hint from another forum :
Use a matchstick, instead of a brush/cotton bud, when attempting to assist them with continuing their thousands of years of evolution. Makes it easier to see if you've got pollen ;)

I grow chillies on the kitchen windowsill and don't do anything to help them set....but still get loads of them..............not noticed loads of insects doing the business .....except maybe the occasional fly  ::)

I use a feather to pollinate them.  The pollen gets trapped between the ribs and doesn;t fall off.

I use a seperate feather for each type of plant so I don't cross pollinate.  It is also useful to use a dark coloured feather that shows up the pollen.  I find that pigeon ones are best (Nice for them to give somehting back)
