Summer Rspberries and placing of rows?
« on: January 05, 2012, 10:22 »
Ok guys,  I have a plot of land 2.2m wide and 3m long, I would very much like to have 2 rows of summer raspberries here.  I will use poles and wires.

I know that this is not a very wide plot for this but do you think I will get away with it, the rows are running North to South?

I need to have a central path/divide and a path on the left  (West) side, 40cm min for the west path.

thanks for any replies.

That's almost exactly the arrangement I have. I find it ideal for 12-14 bushes to keep tidy.

The only thing you need is a good cropper. Enough to be had. :)

So with a 40cm path to the west and in the middle that would leave me with 2 70cm beds.

cool, thanks for the feedback.

Do you think that washing line will be strong enough to support then canes or is wire the way forward?

Either will do. 8)

They do not really need any support. One just wants to keep them out of the way, as they like to flop. But it needs to be that strong, their weight will break some simple garden twine.

Do not be tempted to cover the paths with anything tough. The new shoots would be coming up past it...

I was intending to put slabs down in the long run,

Will there not be enough shots for the next year comming up in teh 70 cm bed that the plants will be in,  I have autum rasops and know they are * for sending up shoots?

Do I want soft paths so that I can remove these stray shoots?

Or I have I misunderstood you?

Yes, you are getting me right. The thing is, it's hard to know, where the new shoots will pop up. Most do come well within a meter, a couple of feet to say, but not in a row, of course.

Some varieties are more vigorous/rampant than others. You can by all means try the slabs, you might get just a few past it and it might not bother you.
