My gut feeling is it's too late which is a pity because my autumn planted sets have all but disappeared. I have got shallots and red onions so all is not lost but I would like more if I can get away with it.  I suppose you could still plant them but they just wouldn't grow very big.

Silly question, but is it possible to freeze leftover onion sets, and use them next year?  I don't see why not really or would it spoil them?  I know someone who always freezes his seeds overnight before he plants them, apparently to trick them into thinking it's spring.

Might very well get away with it, they'll be ready later. Just mind the day of harvest if the autumn is wet.

Masha, I don't think it would be a success.

I'm throwing a few in over the next week or so, to add to the few already in.  See how they do because I'm so far behind it's scary!!

Dont worry, I did not get my plot untill mid may last year, placed shallots and onion sets out, had a good crop from both, and we are still using the onions from last season, so give it ago, they should catch up.

:D I am so pleased you said that because although we have the onions in, hubby has just decided he would like some shallots but I thought it would be too late.  After what you have just said I will now have to source some from somewhere.  Thanks
