Onion's stop growing on the longest day when all the energy in the leaves is transfered down to swell the bulb. As you only have about 3 week's growing time i would say it is far too late.

No leaves before this day = no bulb.

Surely overwintering is the et to go then, if they stop growing mid June........

Overwinter ones do not store well, they should be used as a stop-gap.

I never knew onion growin was so complicated!!!   

Mine were planted late so I have low expectations - they've got a lot of leaf growing to do in the next month    I'm not worried even if my only yield is knowledge for next year...

Growing onion's is not rocket science. Get them in on time, water only in drought condition's, pick the onion's and eat them. Simple's.

Ive got mine in 3" modules been growing for months now and nice a bulky and green. I find this best way to plant them out and then your not rushed to put them out.
