too cold to grow
« on: May 01, 2012, 10:43 »
Hi folks -

Over here there seems to have been a fairly constant cold breeze during April which has meant that even on clear days there is little warmth.

As a result there has been little or no growth- even my broad beans are not taking off.

Anyone else feeling a slow start to the season?

I think most of us are in the same boat  :( and, for here at least, it seems it will continue into the first half of may, if you believe weather forecast!

I really don’t want to start sowing anything until the middle of May. Will I be OK?

yep mine are the same, i wish the weather would make its mind up - one week we have blistering heat, which makes us have a drought, the next we have non stop down pours that makes us have floods - if only it would settle in the middle ;)

what are you wanting to sow?

You should be ok.  Most things will catch up if we eventually get some warm weather.

you should be fine sowing your brassicas now as they dont need any heat - but if you want to sow them in may they should catch up, regarding the sweetcorn most people start theirs off in may anyway, so no need to worry about that ;)

Is it OK to sow straight into the ground allotment or best indoors in pots first?

For various reasons - weather and being away - I have not been on my plot for a couple of weeks but am expecting a mess of germinated weeds. Could do with some dry days to allow me to hoe and find out which things are weeds and which are my seeds I planted weeks ago and am still waiting to see.

Even my weeds are thoughtful about growing so maybe things will not be as bad as you expect bigben

Last year was just as bad for growing as we had weeks of dry weather in the south and keeping seedlings going was a nightmare.  I gave up and sowed later when the weather broke and most things were fine  :)

too cold , too windy,  too dark......
I have been cosseting my sprout seedlings for 5 weeks but I turn my back on them for half an hour today - the sun comes full out and most have scorched to death.

I must learn to split up my seedlings into different trays and put them in separate parts of the garden.  e.g. in the shade, in the sun, north side of the house etc and not put them all together.
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.
