Blanket and pond weed fertilizer
« on: April 30, 2012, 17:28 »
As I have removed blanket and pond weed and let it sit for a few days on a rock (so creatures can get back in the water) I have noticed it going all slimy and smelling a bit like seaweed. Would I be right in guessing that in this state, added to my water butt, it will act like a seaweed tonic to my veg ? I have added a small amount anyway. I would think it full of nutrients.

Yes or add it to the compost bin. If you have a pond filter, all the debris that get's collected by that can be used as a top dressing or composted too.

just posted similar comment on the weeds thread.

Don't add it to your water butt, Duckweed is  indestructible and will grow again.  18 months in my big compost bin and it comes out exactly the same as it went in.   Still green, even.
I bury it in the driest part my garden or plot. Then it disappears and will add nutrients to the soil
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Duck weed wasn't in it as it was pure slime. Anyway, duckweed wouldn't survive in a water butt as there is no light because it's got a plastic lid.

We put blanket weed and duckweed from our pond in our compost heap and they both rotted down well.

My water butt has a lid which has a 3 inch diameter hole to let the down pipe in. Just enough glimmer of light gets past to keep specks of duckweed alive, although they don't multiply.  I've also got dozens of little black water snails in there. But I like them and they can stay.

When I skimmed my pond I got a bucket full of duckweed. (Small pond - thick layer of weed). I just dumped it in the bottom of the compost bin as a sort of cow pat. :D  I didn't turn the heap, and when I emptied it 18 months later the duckweed pile was flat but otherwise unchanged. Everything else had turned to compost.

Answer - turn the compost heap over more!
