Would any of you dare sow direct into the ground rather than faffing with trays, modules etc as it's getting a bit late?  Or, would this be a waste of time and seeds?

Some people do start leeks off in a seed bed in the ground, but you still have to transplant them to their final planting position so you wouldn't gain any efficiency savings.

The difficulty is that leeks need a long growing period and I think, irrespective of where you initially sow them, it's a bit late to be starting them off.  If you're desperate to have them this year, try finding seedlings on a market etc
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You can buy seeds for 'baby leeks' although not having bought any I don't know the sowing times - sorry I wasn't sure if you had bought your seeds or not  :)

I would definitely say go for it - I sowed some a week or so ago, they are just starting to come up. They are a late variety, I can't remember the name, but i'm pretty sure I sowed them this time  last year and got a great crop. I grow them in small troughs, and although I know some people say it makes no difference, I swear by trimming the tops off once they get about 3" high, I think it helps to bulk them out. When planting out, you can be quite rough with them, pulling the tangled roots apart, and I also trim the roots as it makes them easier to put into the holes. As has already been pointed out, you've not much to lose  :)
