My leeks are pathetic, skinny things and not even 2 inches long (No jokes please!)

All the guys down at the plot are merrily planting big, thick 8 inchers!!

Are mine not going to grow in time???
Am I too late to try again???

Dont worry gaffer, they will grow and when they thicken up bank them up for nice white bottoms on the leeks.
I CAME LATE TO THIS GAME, BUT IT'S IN THE BLOOD. I TRY TO BE ORGANIC BUT SORRY HAVE TO USE THE SLUG PELLETS.

I take it you've grown them outside. As stated it's suprising how they can catch up.

It's worth a repeat, have a look at this thread, near the bottom of the page, this is how I do my leeklings, now really sturdy plants & ready to go........

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

What variety are they ... if they don't develop as you would have wished ... you could always eat them as mini-veg

Can I remind all that today is only 2nd JUNE - easy to forget when April was so nice.

You don't want many leeks before the end of September.  My bet is that anyone "merrily planting big, thick 8 inchers" will be moaning like mad in August when they bolt.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this allotment game as well, but I am really enjoying growing seeds in trays to plant out, so far there are cabbage, sprouts, caullies, broccoli, and just coming through are leeks, sweet corn and walking stick cabbage (something my mum gave me to grow probably a cae of nimby).

As its my first season and late at starting I dont expect 100% success this season but what does grow will be enjoyed all the more and I will know for next year....

I was given some leek seedlings a couple of months back. I noticed today that they have really come on in the past couple of weeks.

Being our first year we have no idea when leeks should or should not be planted, but since another plot holder gave us some we just assumed it must be the right time for them.

I started off some seedlings of our own last week and they are just showing now. So far I have been pretty rubbish at raising most seedlings (lots of toms and two runner beans down the pan, oh and the weedy parsley that has only 2 leaves..) so will just have to wait and see how I get on with these ones..
