Herbs
« on: January 22, 2011, 13:47 »
Hi there

I've got a pot with several different herbs in it.  When is the best time to separate them?

We're coming up to the right time quite soon. Splitting can be done successfully in early spring before the growing season gets going. I split both sage and thyme last year in the spring, when they relocated from pots to a bed and they romped away. :)

Good call! Beth didn't actually tell us which herbs she wants to split.

Oh yes, forgot that bit.  There's mint, chives, thyme and parsley, nothing too exciting.  They have been in the pot for two years and they haven't done very well so I'm going to separate them into larger pots and hope they improve.

After reading your comments I'm really surprised the mint hasn't grown.

Mint becomes a victim of its own thuggish nature in a pot; it does OK for a year but strangles itself with a mat of roots going round and round.........
Needs repotting every year using just a couple of the old shoots.

Don't forget that parsley is a biennual; grows the first year, seeds the second year (you can keep it going a bit longer by removing the seed heads but eventually it will die off and need replacing with new plants.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
