I have opted for Sutton variety to over-winter, I understood that these do not need staking but just read that they should be.

Anyone tried these for over-wintering and if so, did you stake or not stake?
in need of getting in the garden

hallo there, i wouldn't have thought they'll be tall enough to need staking over winter - they will just need whatever you can offer in the way of protection from damp cold winter winds till the spring.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

if you need to stake them ,.bang for heavy wood posts in each corner and 2 more down sides in the midddle .of the longest run , now run baler twine or sisal string round the posts connecting each up to the next ,run a few levels round starting at the bottom and werking up to the top .you can also bang a couple of posts in the centre of the bed to support some fleece if its needed.secure the fleece with bands made from old cycle inner tubes or heavy duty elastic bands

I did Sutton last year and the black fly ate them, even though I planted them in autumn. This year I'm hoping the cold will kill some of the black fly and I was going to use fleece as well. That's if they germinate. I think they're just coming through now.
The taller ones do well staked as Munty says.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I've never staked fave, and they've always been fine.  Plant the rows the same direction as the prevailing wind.  We get very strong winds a-blowin this time of year and in the spring - they're too short now, and big enough to withstand it in the spring.

I only grow sutton, I never stake them but do give them protection with glass see photo .....

However the bulk of them go in in spring.
