Sweetpeas
« on: July 12, 2010, 14:42 »
My sweetpeas are rubbish this year compared to last year.  Shame really because I always think I don't care about them, but then the few short little stems I have I cut and put in a jug and I then wish I had done more.

Next year.

On the other hand the geraniums are really good this year.

I was really late with sweetpeas this year so mine are still only 18inches tall and no where near flowering.  I'm hoping for  late flowers just when everything else is packing up :D :D

My hydrangea's are good this year

Despite early planting, mine have only just started to flower as well. Didn't plant any last year and really missed having them around inside the house so I made sure they had a good spot in the garden this year.

This is the first year I have grown them.  They are firmly on the planting list for further years  ... can't think why I haven't planted them before.

Its reassuring to know that mine are not the only one with short stems - the plants only reached about 5 foot this year and most are short stemmed but loads of flowers I cant keep up with the picking. Think I was a  bit late getting them from the pots into the open ground.

For me, it wouldn't be summer without sweetpeas; mine are starting to look a little tired now (aren't we all?!!), but despite baking by a south facing wall, having had 40mph gusts of wind, and for rain for what seems like forever, they've flowered their little socks off!

Hmmmmm........this is the first time I have ever grown sweet peas. They have only reached two feet in height. flowered, put out pods and died. Reading this post and others about sweet peas, this does not sound normal or could it be the variety I have sown?

  Robbo.

P.S. I never took any of the flowers off.

Robbodave, you need to keep cutting the flowers for the house and the plants will keep throwing out loads of flowers - you should get vase-fuls, then the stems start getting shorter as they're tiring and then they seem to give up rather quickly (and look a mess)! Jude.

My sweetpeas were a washout this year - planted loads, and they just rotted in the soil.  I ended up with two plants, both of which are just about holding on, but neither doing well!   :(

Thanks Hey Jude, now I know what to do next year I will be growing a lot more. I did mine in a pot this year and placed them just outside the door, lovely fragrance as you opened the door.

Yesterday OH picked The Sweet Pea Flower (just the one, so far) on the basis that the more you cut , the more you get :). Hoping they will grow taller than their current 8inches too - unless they are frightened by the assault course of canes  that were assembled in anticipation of them reaching the advertised 6ft
