i watched the link on here about taking the middle shoot off the tomatoes and putting in compost.
has anyone done this as mine after a week still look really sad. is this normal?

I've done it once and it worked fine, but I know several people on here who do it regularly.

Did you cut the side shoot out, or just 'pull' it off.  well pull is probably the wrong word.  I just sort of push the shoot with my thumb, it usually comes off cleanly.  I think I put it in rooting powder then just put it in a pot of compost until it started to grow.

I just pinched some out and stuck them straight in the greenhouse border soil.
They looked very sad for a week or 2 but then they are up and running

i tried this with some side shoots.. just pulled them off gently sideways and stuck in the soil.. has been a week and looking pretty dead! Not worried though as have enough anyway! May try with some rooting powder just to check

They are the easiest things in the world to root. I've just got 24 out of 24. As has been said, leave them, they'll pick up - just don't forget to water them!

yeh i just nip them off and i left a few on my plants so they were a good 3 inchs tall. hopefully they will pick up its worth a try in the end.
