Grapevine cuttings
« on: April 13, 2011, 08:28 »
Hello!
I come for more advice... Our neighbouring plot has been left untouched for a couple of years and we found out there is a grapevine that produces fantastically tasty fruits (black grapes).

I read up online on how to get cuttings  and took some cuttings earlier this spring; placed them in the greenhouse under polythene bag. Not sure if my luck will last but more than half have growing buds.

I have been told by someone that they think that they may not come true ( I believe he meant they may not produce fruits)... I have checked this forum for info but it does not seem like this question was raised. Can anyone tell me if I am wasting my time?

Thanks in advance!
Laurence

Hi.
I've just planted 25 vines to hopefully create a mini vineyard.
I've done quite a bit of research into mine with the right grape variety, planting techniques and pruning later on next year etc etc.
You won't get any fruit this year as the vine needs to mature.
As it hasn't been grafted onto American root stock than you may have a problem with phylloxera. This is a nasty that has wiped out many vines throughout Europe.
However, planting into a large pot for the patio should give you results.
As the south is a sunny place to be, temperatures should be fine.
Here are some websites that may help you.

Top tip for camping....don't go.

Thanks a lot for your advice and info!

I knew about phylloxera, but it did not even think about it ! I will have to bear it in mind now.

I am happy to wait for a year (have done so for my rhubarb, and fruit bushes...) but was really concerned that a cutting may never yield anything!  It is therefore  very reassuring that it could produce fruits eventually and I will read up the info on the sites you recommended.

best wishes for your own vineyard!
