how do i sex my chickens?

it is really urgent! our chickens have just layed eggs (dark and speckeld) and we have realised we ahvent sexed our hens yet! we need to know what sex they are urgently so we know if our eggs are gong to be fertilised or not! please reply asap! :!:

Anything that lays an egg is female. If you have any problems post pictures. It doesn't make any difference to you as the end user whether or not the eggs are fertilised or not. Cocks crow of course.

How many eggs are you getting? If you have had 3 in a day sounds like you have three girls. As Bodger says, girls lay eggs and boys crow! It doesn't matter if eggs are fertilized for eating but if you want to hatch eggs you're going to need a boy

we got the first laying today and we got two eggs, both dark brown and speckled so we are assuming they are from the same chicken as we have 3 different types of chicken

As a rule hen's only lay once a day, there are exceptions of course

Are you able to pop some photo's of the hens up? We might be able to identify them for you, then give you an idea of egg colours etc...

Well sounds like you have at least 2 girls then

Where did you get them from and were they sold to you as girls or straight-sexed (ie pot luck with regards to gender).

we got them from this bloke who breeds pure breds not too far from henley, and the chicks were all cared for by one chicken who was very broody and we just got to choose one from the bunch that were running about.

Congratulations then! At least 2 out of 3 girls is pretty good then. All three of my ducklings were boys!

thanks everyone for your help (: we looked them up and we finally found them! and they are all girls! we have a ginger buff orpington, a french copper maran and a blue araucana! and it is our maran that has been laying (:
