Have just picked some baby beets and cooked whole. They taste OK at first but have a bitter aftertaste. Variety Albina veruna ( white). Is this normal? O r is there a growing problem? They took ages to grow but are only golf ball size

Sorry Jackie, I hope someone more knowledgeable will be along soon to help.  I've only ever grown the red ones for OH, as I don't like beetroot, but OH won't try any other sorts, he only likes red!

Where did you get them from?  Is there a catalogue that says perhaps they are a preferred taste?

try and boil em with a spoon full of sugar in the water

The white variety is not as good in my opinion
