Selling surplus eggs
« on: November 22, 2008, 09:17 »
I have read the article about selling eggs at the garden gate with interest.  My girls are just starting to lay and I am thinking about selling the surplus to neighbours (some have already asked if I have any spares).  The article gives information regarding the Defra rules, but I was wondering if anybody knew what the rules were regarding the taxman.  Do I have to keep proper business records or is this just pocket money?  We would be talking about selling a couple of dozen eggs a week, not any full scale egg production!

Many thanks.

For a few quid for a couple of dozen eggs I don't think anyone would bother the taxman over trifles like that. It would confuse the poor fellow especially as you could then start talking about whether things like feed are tax deductable. Sounds like a whole can of (dried meal) worms and best not opened!

Where the taxman is concerned, what he don't know won't hurt him, will it?  :)

And its not like your going to place ads in the local paper
and if there is ever a problem there not paying for the eggs just helping to pay for there upkeep of the birds in exchange for eggies

Hi Lele, welcome to the forums. :)

I think as said, it's only if you make a profit that you need worry.

Hope to see you around.

i had someone at my works who threatened to dob me in to the tax man when we had an arguement once about me selling the eggs      the funny thing is though  hes brought eggs of me before .

i cant see them even caring about ppl selling a few eggs every now and then but a way out of it is to say ppl are giving u a donation towards the birds upkeep , thats what i say when i have to speak to ppl at the council  but at a meeting with them the other week i let it slip  to one of the bosses that i do sell them an she was like well thats good at least it re buys their feed

That's right, if you told the taxman that you are selling your eggs,   You coud say well I make £5 a week selling eggs, but the chickens cost me £10 a week to keep, perhaps you'd get a tax rebate????   :D  :D

So unless you are charging about £10 a dozen, I don't suppose you'd make any profit anyway!  so just carry on and sell a few eggs.
