Rusty Garlic?
« on: July 12, 2011, 05:52 »
Hi, i visited the plot last night, and unfortunately my garlic looks like it has rust. Lots of rough brown/red spots on the leaves. I lifted one of the bulbs at the weekend and they haven't finished growing yet, still soft skins on em. What's best treatment? do I just leave em? My onions are right next to them, can it spread? sorry if these are noob questions but not had this problem before.

Thanks

First thing it to check it is rust, as this is serious and fatal

Check out this article as it might help you diagnose it and decide what to do.

Burning the leaves that are infected is essential to stop spores spreading.

Don't panic ! ! !  My garlic was covered in rust and they are now drying in a couple of mushroom trays looking good.   :D  Cheers,    Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Luckily rust on leaves does not affect storage of the heads of garlic.

Hope yours are large enough to harvest, Scotch Thistle  :D

The bulbs are not dry enough yet, the skins haven't 'set' yet. Are they safe to just leave to finish growing?

The rust (if that is what it is) won't affect the head and you can leave it growing but the leaves might weel shrivel completely.

When you do pull it up, burn the leaves (said this already I know) and avoid growing any of the onion family in that spot ofr three years to avoid spores in the soil affecting these crops.

Hope that helps  :D
