re-using compost
« on: March 11, 2022, 07:42 »
Hi I am re-using last years compost, however I have found several vine weevil grubs and am sure I will have missed some. Has anyone any ideas how to treat this compost?

What volume are we talking?
Guessing they wouldn't enjoy being microwaved.

we use all of our spent compost's down the allotments and yes vine weevil are a problem but I've found when we spread the compost  over the raised beds the birds have a field day waste not want not comes to mind  :D

How were you thinking of using them (pots, mulch?), and for which plants?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I wouldn't use any compost that had an active infestation of a potential pest of affected crops/ornamentals.

Vine weevils live at least part of their life in the soil, which is why they are in the compost, and also why they are hard to treat with pesticides.  Some beneficial nematode treatments work, also some biologic treatments based on fungi.

You might be able to spread it on the lawn far from potentially-affected crops or ornamentals.

I will be using this compost for hanging baskets and containers growing mainly flowers. Up to now I have 12 50L bags but much more to sieve.

I would certainly use them down the allotment spread thinly the birds will eat all the grubs
Is I wanted to use it at home I would spread it on a board and leave it a day or so and the birds will again clean it for you.
