Brinsea Octagon 20 advice please
« on: May 29, 2009, 23:55 »
It's all your faults, I've been mildly contemplating incubators and now it's getting serious, but..........

Do I want the ECO.......with the turning cradle..............without the turning cradle?
Or do I want the Advance............with the turning cradle......... or without?
The Advance Ex is not an option, too expensive, got to stop somewhere :(

Is it a real pain to turn the eggs? Does the black bit (controller) on the top hinder the view?
Does the Advance make it easier to keep the humidity right?
I know it takes 20 eggs but can you run it as well with half a dozen?
Hope some-one can answer at least some of the questions ;)

Thank you

PS Don't tell him indoors  :tongue2:

My new incy was supposed to be semi auto but the tray you are supposed to move is rubbish so the last 2 weeks i have spent turning 24 eggs by hand 3 times a day!! its been a nightmare! only 2 more days of turning to go!! having a good view is good as then your not tempted to open incy when they start to hatch!! :D

i have the brinsea oct 20 eco without the cradle, turning is easy as you just tilt the whole incy (no need to remove the lid and take out the eggs like with the covattuto) the only downside is that if you pack it with 20 eggs, candle at 7 day's and find some duds you have to start messing about with seperators or when you turn them they crash into each other, i have had a good hatch rate with ducklings in mine.

The good thing with the Octagon 20 -is you can always buy things like the cradle and humidity pump later if you want. I have the Octagon 20 adance and have added the pump which is brilliant I must say. :)

having the turning cradle makes it very easy.  all you need do is top the water up during the first 18 days and stop the turning at 18 days - I take mine out of the cradle.  I've got the 10 and had some good results.  The last hatch was 8 out of 10.

I got a cheap manual incy and really enjoyed turning the eggs, and if like me dont have the space for many more birds used in february and later when an hatched cock is put with my leghorns then maybe 2/3 years when my older birds pass on is the expense worth it.

I have been round something similar, the makers of Bristol incubators have enormous walk-in incubators rooms which house thousands of eggs, it was an incredible experience!
