Grafted plants and seed saving
« on: August 23, 2013, 17:49 »
I was wondering...   ???

...grafted plants are supposed to be more vigorous, tastier, stronger and more disease resistant - so far I'm seeing this and I'm really pleased.

Do you reckon I can save the seed from these?   ???
Or do you think it would be like saving the seed of F1's - pointless - nice plant, no fruit/veg??

Have gurgled it but can't find anything about it.
Stands to reason that if you could, the seeds should produce pretty good plants?

Any thoughts/previous knowledge - gratefully accepted

Don't grafted plants do well because they take a good fruiting variety and graft it onto a variety with a good root system? That's what my understanding was anyway.

Therefore the seeds will be those of the good fruiting variety and won't have the good rootstock/system that aids the original grafted plants.

That's how I would see it anyway - but am happy to be corrected!

You could save seed of the top plant variety ( unless they were f1)  but if you grow them they would not benefit from the vigour that the grafted rootstock gave to the plants this year IYSWIM

Aaah gotcha ;)

I'd sussed out 'tbh' but had seen that a few times lately and wondered. :D

You don't think the seeds might be better quality then? I now it's the root stock that provides the health and vigour...

...what do they use for the rootstock - anyone know?? ???

I have my curious head on :D

Why not try grafting your own next year. It can be done reasonably easily with superglue.
