My tassles are going brown but as I am off on Holiday at the end of next week for 16 days, they are getting harvested before I go as they will definatly be far to far gone when I get back.

A random Question entered my mind. If you leave the cobs to dry completely, do the kernal's turn to popping corn ? or is that a special variety ?

We have only just got an allotment and a few of our neighbours are growing corn, they look great!

Went to the garden centre today and they had some trays of corn plants there.  About 6 inches high.  My son was desperate to buy some to plant.  Would there be any chance of cobs this year if we did get them?

I've just harvester my first one!  :D

I thought everybody was exaggerating when they said that you'll never taste sweetcorn like homegrown sweetcorn, but OMG it's AMAZING!

I'm still chomping on it now!

Boiled the water, picked the corn, 4-5 mins in the water and done! Butter, salt and pepper et voila!  :D
Trying to live the good life.. getting there slooooowly...

If they are cheap to buy I'd give them a go, if we have an "indian summer" you may do ok. One year we ended up picking ours in October

I am a total beginner in the veg growing game.

I have 2 plants in my garden that are approx 6ft, I have had 6 stems with the sticky stuff (hair like) OMG I really am struggling to explain that last bit!!   and have 3 plant tops (the bit with the seeds) (one of these grew from the stem of the plant)

I sprinkled some of the seeds on to the sticky hair like stuff and can see a swelling in the plant behind where these came from.

How long does it normally take from this point to sweetcorn? :?:

Sorry about the above but as I said "I am a total beginner in the veg growing game"

Thanks

The seed bit you are referring to is actually the male flower, the hair bits are the female tassles that need to receive the male pollen so as you only have 2 plants (most folks plant in blocks of 9 / 16 / 24 etc to aid wind pollination) I'd say you're doing the right thing.

If the cobs (the bits behind the tassles) are pollinated then the tassles will go brown and you pick them when the tassles are dark and if you open one of the husks and puncture one of the cobs the 'sap is milky white.  It usually  takes about 2-3 weeks to get to this point.

once you have got them to that point get them onto the barbie / in a pot of boiling water and you'll have the best meal from one plant that you've ever tasted.... I'm hungry now!

Our sweetcorn (Swift) are chest height and we noticed first tassles other day. Decided that our block of 9 wouldn't be enough so started another block late. If I said they were 8" high, I'd be exaggerating, but nothing ventured nothing gained!
