Vaccinations and breeders
« on: February 06, 2008, 21:15 »
I have been thinking about getting some chooks as pets for quite a while now. I think I have finally decided that bantams would be best for us. I have found a fairly local breeder but they only vaccinate against Mareks disease as this has to be given early on.

Do I need to get them vaccinated against other things and if so is this something a local vet would do. Any idea how costly this would be?

I am only going to get 3 chooks and it is unlikely that they would ever leave the garden.

Any advice on this would be helpful.

Also can anyone recommend a good breeder in the north hampshire area.

Thank you.

Vaccinating for anything other than Merek's is not usually done by small breeders as the vaccines are only sold in large flock size amounts.  Some need to be injected. So not echonolical except for large breeders.

If you are keeping just a few birds in your garden the risk to your birds from most of the poultry diseases is minute.

Worms, mites and lice are the things you may need to keep on top of  :D

I've had the same concerns!  I had 300 chicks, and they were vaccinated against Mareks by the hatchery, but whe I enquired about the her things, like Newcastles and Coccidiosis, the hatchery said tht it isn't worth it if you only have a small flock, and the feed we have had an anti cooicial in it, but they have been wormed, and I've given them coxoid, but that is all very expensive for 300, but if I buy the big amounts, the dosages are for 1.000!!!!!

I notice that some birds are vaccinated agaianst salmonella and some are not. If the birds I get are not vaccinated against this do I have to be careful about not letting my children lick the cake mixture out of the bowl. etc and should I let my friends/neighbours know if I give my eggs away?

Was that a munty moment Auntie?

Stickywicket - not sure that it's quite Hampshire, but you could try Eden Livestock (google it) in Middle Wallop. Nice hybrids (I think they might do pure breeds too) and a comprehensive vaccination programme.

Thanks for that. I have now spotted the poultry suppliers list on this forum and have contacted Eden. The lady was very helpful.
